Why do leaves fall off trees? Is the tree dying? No, the tree goes into hibernation.
Trees shed leaves in winter. The roots can’t absorb water from the soil and the sap flow is interrupted.
The leaves provide nutrients, but they also release vapor.
If this evaporation process continues through the winter, the tree dries out.
That’s why the tree collects all the nutrients from the leaves and then closes it’s leaf pores. This is when we can see them changing colour.
When the tree has enough water and food to last through the winter, the tree stops holding on to its leaves. See you next year, tree!
